Nakshi Kantha is a very common, popular and well liked craft of our country, Bangladesh. It is a traditional trend of our culture. It is a sort of embroidery quilt. The name ‘nakshi kantha’ was taken from a Bengali word naksha which means artistic pattern. Actually, the word nakshi kanta became famous after the poet Jasim Uddin’s poem ‘nakshi kanthar math’ was published in 1929. The traditional craft is famous for its embroidery .Mainly, it is made of colourful thread and cloth together with different patterns and design. It has brought about a revolutionary change in our Bengali test of fashion. It is not only famous in Bangladesh but also indigenous to West Bengal in India. Besides that, it has been prepared by the rural women for centuries. From the beginning, it was made for family use, but now the scenery is completely changed because now it is not only produced for family use but also for commercial purpose. These quilts are used on old or new fabrics and threads. Pictures of animals, flowers, birds, leaves, men and women, instruments of daily use are sewn on it. It takes several months to make it complete. Everyone believes that nakshi kantha enhances the beauty of a house. Otherwise, it has a profound relationship with life and culture. Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Bogra and Jessore are most famous for this craft in Bangladesh. We can find them in many expensive handicraft shops in cities. It is also sold in fashion shops. At present it has a great demand in many countries of the world too. It wonderfully helps our national economy because every year Bangladesh earns a lot of foreign money by exporting Nakshi Kantha. So, we should be more careful of this craft for our greater interest.
